The Carolina Panthers' quarterback situation has undergone another shakeup ahead of Week 11. Recent starter P.J. Walker is now dealing with a high-ankle sprain that will knock him out for at least this game, thrusting Baker Mayfield back into the QB1 role.
Down one of their signal-callers for this Sunday, Carolina is adding some depth to its practice squad.
The Panthers are set to sign former Houston and Miami QB D'Eriq King following Walker's injury, according to his agent. He provides the team another body for Week 11 prep with Walker sidelined.
King played a total of six years in college, spending four seasons with the Cougars before transferring to the Hurricanes. His junior campaign was by far his best as a passer, posting 2,982 yards, 36 touchdowns and just 6 interceptions in 2018. He had another solid year in 2020 at Miami, recording 2,686 yards, 23 TDs and 5 INTs across 11 games.
The 25-year-old was known for his dual-threat skill-set in college, rushing for over 2,000 yards and 32 TDs from 2016-2021. He also played part-time as a wide receiver during 2016 and 2017 at Houston.
Sam Darnold is the only other QB on the Panthers' active roster with Walker injured and Matt Corral on IR. Practice squad signal-caller Jacob Eason was released last week.
