The Carolina Panthers are strongly considering drafting a quarterback with the No. 8 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, so naturally, they were paying close attention to the BYU Pro Day last week.

Zach Wilson was the center of attention, but he was not the only player on the field.

Former BYU wideout Micah Simon, an undrafted free agent from 2020, impressed the Panthers enough to earn a contract.

This is an unusual situation, and it seems to have worked out perfectly for the Panthers. Simon was able to sign as a free agent as opposed to requiring a draft pick because he declared for the 2020 NFL Draft but was not selected, making him an undrafted free agent.

He didn't get a pro day last year because the COVID pandemic hit, but he made the most of his opportunity in 2021.

Originally recruited as a defensive back in 2015, Simon went on to catch 90 passes for 1,109 yards and 5 touchdowns with the Cougars.

Simon will serve as a depth piece (if he makes the final roster) with Robby Anderson, DJ Moore and David Moore holding down the top receiver positions in the Carolina offense.
