It's like déjà vu for Christian McCaffrey and the Carolina Panthers this season. After struggling with injuries in 2020, only playing three games, the superstar running back is being crushed by the injury bug once again in 2021.

Christian McCaffrey Injury Update

The team announced Saturday that they are placing McCaffrey on the IR, officially sidelining him for the next three weeks, at least.

After starting 3-0 with McCaffrey in the backfield, the Panthers have gone 0-2 without him. While rookie running back Chuba Hubbard has filled in admirably, averaging over 75 rushing yards per game during that time, Carolina is clearly missing McCaffrey.

Hamstring issues can be really tricky and a very sensitive injury that if not dealt with properly, can linger for a while. Carolina knows from experience last season.

So while it's disappointing to be without their best player for the next three weeks at least, it might be the better decision for the long term, giving him a chance to fully recover and be back for the majority of the season's second half.

Until then, they will continue to rely on their rookie RB and a defense that has been dominant this season, ranking No. 1 in opponent rushing yards per game and No. 8 in opponent rushing yards per game.

Carolina is a 2.5-point home underdog against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 6, according to FanDuel Sportsbook's latest NFL odds.
