Over the past month, the San Diego Padres have seen their spot in the division standings slowly slip away while the San Francisco Giants remain red hot. San Diego now trails by 7.0 games in the NL West, but still retains a hold on the second Wild Card spot.
The success of the Padres has surprisingly been from the dominant pitching staff. Despite some previous injury troubles, reliver Drew Pomeranz has been right at the center of the team's current playoff hopes.
With his 1.75 ERA in hand, the Padres got a scare after their lefty bullpen arm experienced forearm tightness on Tuesday night. He'll be further evaluated on Wednesday.
Drew Pomeranz Injury Update
The worst part of this news stems from a potential reoccurrence of this injury. This is the exact same ailment that landed Pomeranz on the injured list back in July.
For now, the Padres will hope for a best-case scenario. This team understands the importance of his success. San Diego's bullpen ranks atop all of baseball with a 2.88 ERA mark. Their starting rotation, on the other hand, ranks just 13th with a 4.11 ERA mark.
