The shortened 72-game regular season is winding down. Some teams are preparing for the playoffs and a possible title run. But while the top teams battle for playoff seeding, some squads will miss the playoffs and possibly look for a new head coach next season.

Here are three NBA coaches who are on the hot seat as the season winds down.

1. Luke Walton, Sacramento Kings

Luke Walton is in his second season on the bench for the Sacramento Kings, and he'll record his second straight losing season this year. That followed three losing seasons in Los Angeles as head coach of the Lakers. The Kings (28-37) are in last place in the Pacific division, and criticism is that the team is not showing enough improvement under Walton's guidance. Many former players have failed to become winning head coaches, and Walton seems to be joining that list.

2. Steve Clifford, Orlando Magic

The Orlando Magic (21-44) have struggled this season as management traded away its top players. The team has also lost more games each season since Steve Clifford's tenure started with 42 wins in 2018-19. The Magic made the playoffs in Clifford's first two seasons, but he's in a difficult situation and odds are against him remaining in Orlando.

3. Scott Brooks, Washington Wizards

Scott Brooks may be saving his job late in the season after being named Eastern Conference Coach of the Month. But he looked to be left for dead in Washington after a poor post-All-Star break stretch in March. Brooks is in his fifth season coaching Washington, and made the playoffs his first two years. Now in the final year of his contract, it may be too little too late with the Wizards in jeopardy of missing the playoffs.
