Most Likely Teams to Draft Tua Tagovailoa

The common phrase for NFL fans used to be "Tank for Tua," up until his most recent injury that caused the in-demand Alabama quarterback's status to be in question. Tua Tagovailoa missed the second half of this year's college season, but his camp claims that he has recovered well since.

Although there is certainly long-term risk attached to drafting Tua now, he has proven to be an incredibly accurate and gifted passer when on the field. The injuries may even provide a discounted draft status for those still on the Tua train. Having said that, here are the franchises that are most likely to take a chance on Tagovailoa in April.

4. Washington Redskins

As we know, the Washington Redskins drafted quarterback Dwayne Haskins in the first round last year. That doesn't necessarily mean much in the modern NFL however, especially with a brand new coaching staff led by Ron Rivera. Remember, the Arizona Cardinals drafted Josh Rosen with their first rounder in 2018, only to select Kyler Murray with the first overall pick in 2019. It has worked out for the Cards, so perhaps the Redskins will look to take a page out of their book by building around the franchise QB they prefer. With the No. 2 pick, only the Bengals-Joe Burrow connection could stop them.

3. Detroit Lions

The team with the No. 3 pick in the NFL Draft is the Detroit Lions. If the Redskins stand pat and use their pick on someone like Chase Young, Tua would be on the board for the Lions. This would all depend on the willingness to move away from Matt Stafford however, and the ability to find a trading partner that could absorb his contract. If coach Matt Patricia and his managing partners felt Tagovailoa is a generational talent, they might make this move in a decision to look to the future.

2. Los Angeles Chargers

The Los Angeles Chargers have already moved on from Philip Rivers, and many expect them to draft a new franchise QB with the No. 6 overall pick. If they want Tua, they might need some help with not only the Bengals, Redskins and Lions sitting before them, but the quarterback-needy Miami Dolphins as well. The Chargers have been linked to QB prospects like Justin Herbert and Jordan Love along with Tua, but if they really want the Alabama kid, they might just have to trade up with a team like the New York Giants (fourth pick) to get him.

1. Miami Dolphins

The original "Tank for Tua" fan base never counted on their team winning so many games last season. They also didn't count on Tagovailoa getting drafted anywhere but first overall in 2020. It would appear that both fates may have aligned, as the Miami Dolphins are still the favorites to select Tua with their fifth overall pick. Being that veteran gunslinger Ryan Fitzpatrick and third-year UCLA product Josh Rosen are the current QB's on the roster, the Phins may do whatever it takes to get their guy in April, even if they have to leap up the order and trade block a team like the Chargers.
