Toronto Blue Jays second baseman/infielder Marcus Semien enjoyed a career season as he smashed 45 home runs and 102 RBIs. To no surprise, the All-Star and Gold Glove infielder rejected his $18.4 million qualifying offer from Toronto to become a fully unrestricted free agent.
Semien will be one of the most sought-after free-agent shortstops this winter and let's check out three of the most likely free-agent destinations for the 31-year-old slugging infielder.
Marcus Semien Free Agency
1. Toronto Blue Jays
Have no fear, Blue Jays fans. There is a legitimate reality in which Semien comes right back and re-signs with the Blue Jays. His rejection of the qualifying offer was simply a sound business decision and the All-Star infielder will earn a much bigger payday than $18.4 million for one year. Semien's career season at the dish drives this factor, but the Blue Jays would love to keep this core together after winning 91 games in 2021.
2. Seattle Mariners
The Seattle Mariners fell just short of the playoffs after winning 90 games and the team is in desperate need of a power infield bat with Kyle Seager's likely departure. Semien is a perfect answer and enough of a factor to thrust Seattle into playoff contention next season. The Mariners scored just 4.30 runs per game (23rd) and Seager accounted for 73 runs scored and 101 RBIs. Semien has a proven ability to play 2B, SS or 3B and can plug in nicely alongside J.P. Crawford.
3. Chicago White Sox
The Chicago White Sox featured one of the most complete rosters in baseball last season, ranking top-5 in runs scored and ERA. Cesar Hernandez filled in nicely at 2B, but grabbing an additional 45 home runs and 102 RBIs to a lineup that scored 4.91 runs per game is a championship offseason move. Hernandez slashed just .232/.309/.299 compared to Semien's .265/.334/.538 slash line.
