A midseason firing of manager Joe Girardi has helped the Philadelphia Phillies catapult into Wild Card contention heading toward the All-Star break. With a 43-38 record, the Phillies are on pace to break a decade-long playoff drought and line up to be a stealthy buyer at the MLB trade deadline in August.

Philadelphia Phillies Trade Rumors

Philadelphia could easily opt to address a weak center field position or grab another starting pitcher to solidify the rotation moving forward. However, ESPN's David Schoenfield expects the team to focus on upgrading the bullpen and names Detroit Tigers' Gregory Soto as a potential trade target.

The Phillies have been criticized time and time again for their lack of shutdown relievers. They finished among the bottom five NL teams in bullpen ERA in both 2020 and 2021, but things have evened out a bit in 2022. Philadelphia currently owns the seventh-best mark in the category (3.84).

Meanwhile, Soto has been dominating with the Tigers so far this summer, logging a 2.48 ERA and 1.14 WHIP across 30 appearances (29.0 innings). He has also allowed only one home run on the year and has notched 16 saves in 18 opportunities. That is a level of consistency the Phillies don't have.

One thing to keep in mind about Soto is that he is under club control for another three seasons. Philadelphia would need to make the return worthwhile for Detroit, but it's certainly worth a shot. Soto is only 27 years old and seems to be tapping into his full potential during his fourth MLB season.

The Phillies have odds set at +4500 to win the World Series, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
