It's only two weeks into the 2021 MLB season and the New York Mets sit first in the NL East. With a 5-3 record, the team is one game ahead of the second-place Philadelphia Phillies. Unfortunately, not everybody is giving the Mets the respect that they deserve.

The Mets are ranked No. 9 in ESPN's latest MLB power rankings. That may not seem too bad in the grand scheme of things, but that ranking is three spots lower than the team was last week (No. 6).

After losing 2-1 in their series with the Phillies to open the new season, the Mets have gone 4-1 since. That even includes winning their last three games straight against the Phillies, outscoring their divisional rivals to the tune of 13-4 so far.

The Mets have been one of the best teams in 2021 when it comes to limiting the opposition's scoring opportunities. They're allowing just 3.25 runs per game (5th) while also averaging 9.88 strikeouts (10th). One thing that the Mets do need to work on is their own runs production, which is near the bottom of the MLB at 3.62 per game (26th).

Despite a mediocre start, the Mets have all the tools to be a big player this season. If they can keep playing as they have in their last five games, ESPN will have to give them their respect sooner than later.
