The New York Mets came into the 2021 season surrounded by a lot of hype given they have all of the pieces to compete for a World Series title. Well, on paper at least. They are off to a 7-6 start, but have one glaring issue that is causing them to lose games.
The Mets cannot play defense right now. They are averaging just over one unearned run given up per game this year, which is insane for a professional team. This shouldn't surprise anyone as the Mets have not had a Gold Glove winner since 2014, which is the longest streak in baseball.
Mets Defensive Struggles
The Mets have arguably one of the best pitching staffs in the league with ace Jacob deGrom (0.45 ERA in 2021) and Marcus Stroman (0.90 ERA) leading the way. However, they are being let down by a defense that is averaging 0.85 errors per game behind them (No. 26 in MLB).
Plus, it isn't just one player weighing them down as seven different Mets have at least 1 error so far this season. Manager Luis Rojas did stay positive about the topic in his latest press conference explaining how the team knows they need to improve and they need to put in the work in order to do so.
The Mets are currently in first place in the National League East division and seem like they could be fighting for a playoff spot come September. However, they drastically need to address whatever is going on with their historically bad defense right now.
