Now that the MLB's 2022 Lockout is in full swing, the New York Mets have turned their attention to their current managerial vacancy. Managerial and staff hiring is still allowed during the lockout and MLB insider Buster Olney has linked New York to an exciting potential candidate.
According to Olney, the Mets have formally asked permission to speak to Tampa Bay Rays' bench coach Matt Quatraro.
Mets Offseason Rumors
It's still unclear if Tampa Bay will approve this discussion, but this is an exciting step in New York's search for their 2022 manager. Quatraro is considered a great candidate for managerial openings around baseball.
The former eighth round selection of the 1996 MLB Draft has worked with Tampa Bay's coaching staff since 2018. Tampa Bay has gone 326-220 in that span including three straight postseason appearances.
New York parted ways with Luis Rojas after a disappointing 77-85 finish in 2021. But, after a flurry of offseason moves pre-lockout, the Mets are currently listed with +1100 (T-3rd) odds to win the 2022 World Series on FanDuel Sportsbook.
