The second week of the Green Bay Packers' organized team activities (OTAs) are fully underway, but one player has been noticeably absent. Veteran left tackle David Bakhtiari has yet to make an OTA drill appearance, but that's all a part of the team's plan, according to head coach Matt LaFleur.

On Tuesday, LaFleur told reporters that Bakhtiari was always going to sit out of OTAs because the Packers want him to be as strong as can be for training camp. The 30-year-old veteran played only one game in 2021 after suffering a torn ACL during the 2020 NFL season.

David Bakhtiari Injury Update

On one hand, Packers fans should be happy that Bakhtiari isn't being rushed into a situation that he isn't prepared for. On the other, some might be concerned that he still isn't healthy enough to participate in OTAs despite his injury taking place in December 2020.

LaFleur was also asked if he was concerned about Bakhtiari's health, to which the Packers coach replied by saying "[he's] played a lot of ball and it’s best to hold him from this portion of [OTAs]." That's not exactly a ringing endorsement of health.

Bakhtiari is one of the Packers' most important players on offense when healthy. He was named All-Pro every year from 2016 to 2020, allowing only 12 total sacks over 4,674 offensive snaps in that span. That translates to an average of 2.4 sacks on about 935 snaps per season.

Packers fans won't have to wait long to see if the rest from OTAs actually helps Bakhtiari. Although a date isn't official, Green Bay's training camp is expected to begin at the end of July.

Packers Super Bowl Odds

Bakhtiari having a full recovery is necessary if the Packers want to win their first championship in over a decade. The odds are already looking go to turn that into a reality, with Green Bay being +1200 (No. 5) to win Super Bowl LVII, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
