The New York Mets, who once held a double-digit game lead in the NL East division, have now seen that lead disappear and as of Saturday morning, trail the Atlanta Braves by 0.5 games. Injuries have been one of the reasons the Mets have seen this lead shrink to nothing.
Star outfielder Starling Marte is one of those injured players, suffering a non-displaced fracture in his right middle finger on Tuesday.
Starling Marte Injury Update
The Mets elected not to place him on the IL immediately, in hopes that he could test and eventually play through the injury. That test hasn't successfully happened yet, and if it doesn't by end of day Saturday, Marte could officially find himself heading on the IL.
After singing as a free agent this past offseason, Marte has been great for the Mets this season, slashing .292/.347/.468 with 16 home runs and 68 RBI.
Marte is a crucial part of this Mets lineup and missing him for an extended period will have its effects. New York is hoping they can limit his time to the 10-day minimum on the IL.
The Mets currently have +500 odds to win the World Series, good enough for the third-best odds in the MLB, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
