When the San Francisco 49ers' mandatory minicamp kicked off on Monday, Jimmy Garoppolo was one of the absent names. The veteran quarterback is still recovering from offseason shoulder injury that significantly shrunk his trade value as the 49ers attempt to move him.
The longer Garoppolo goes without playing, the likelier it is that he begins the 2022 NFL season on the 49ers' roster. When asked what happens if No. 10 is still on the roster come July on Tuesday, head coach Kyle Shanahan laid out his expectations for the signal-caller.
Jimmy Garoppolo 49ers Rumors
As long as Garoppolo is healthy next month, Shanahan expects him to show up to training camp. This plan of action comes just a day after the 49ers' coach told the media on Monday that he expects Garoppolo to "most likely to be traded."
"I expect [Garoppolo] at some time, most likely to be traded, but who knows. It's not a guarantee and it's been exactly on hold when that happened. And when he is healthy, we'll see what happens."- Kyle Shanahan
Rumors of a potential Garoppolo trade surfaced earlier this offseason when both sides made it clear that parting ways would be mutually beneficial. San Francisco seems to be all in on Trey Lance as a starter despite the elder statesman bringing the 49ers to two NFC Championship Games and a Super Bowl over the last three seasons.
When Garoppolo is healthy, several teams should line up for his services, whether through a trade or the buyout market. He might not be an elite quarterback, but he's produced results and that'll be good enough for a team looking to take a step closer to a Super Bowl.
