Kyle Shanahan is widely regarded as one of the best head coaches in football. At the very least, he's a top-three offensive mind. But the folks over at CBS Sports don't seem to agree.
Shanahan checked in at No. 11 in their latest NFL head coach power rankings. That is so low it can only be described as disrespectful.
Their argument hinges on the fact that Shanahan owns a career 29-35 regular-season record in his four seasons with the San Francisco 49ers. That's obviously not what you'd expect from an elite head coach, but it's completely unfair to hold that against him without considering the context.
Since taking the job in San Francisco, Shanahan has had precisely one full season with a healthy Jimmy Garoppolo. In that lone campaign, he took the 13-3 49ers to the Super Bowl, where they finished one errant deep ball away from a title.
In total, Shanahan is 22-8 in games Garoppolo starts and 7-27 in games he doesn't.
Not to take anything away from Jimmy G, but he's not the type of player whose mere presence transforms a sub-.500 team into a Super Bowl contender. The 49ers' poor record during his many absences says more about the play of Garoppolo's replacements than anything else.
And criticizing Shanahan for losing with Nick Mullens and C.J. Beathard is like blaming Dale Earnhardt Jr. for losing a NASCAR race while driving a Toyota Sienna.
With a combination of Trey Lance and Jimmy G, Shanahan should have some reliable QB play for just the second time in the last five seasons. Given what he did with that in 2019, fans should expect the offensive guru to make these rankings look silly by the time next season rolls around.
