Kirk Cousins Has Unsurprising Stance on Contract Extension Negotiations
The Minnesota Vikings have a big decision to make at quarterback this offseason. Current starter Kirk Cousins is entering the last year of his contract, and it's unclear if he'll stick around past 2022.
Minnesota's new regime seems open to seeing how things work out this season. Cousins, though, has an unsurprising mindset if the team wants to negotiate an extension to keep him around.
Kirk Cousins Contract Extension
The Athletic's Chad Graff reports that conversations at the NFL Combine indicate Cousins "isn’t going to offer any sort of hometown discount" to remain in Minnesota.
Getting his full compensation is clearly something Cousins cares about. It's also been revealed he won't take any kind of pay cut for the 2022 season to help the Vikings free up money to bring in or retain players.
The fact that Cousins won't likely consider taking less in a possible extension doesn't come as a surprise. His leadership and willingness to make sacrifices is something that's been called into question throughout his tenure in Minnesota, so there's no reason to expect him to approach his next potential contract with the team's best interests in mind.
He has undoubtedly been productive, throwing for at least 4,200 yards in each of the past two seasons along with a combined 68 touchdown passes. The Vikings also missed the playoffs in both years, but hopefully new head coach Kevin O'Connell can turn things around.
Cousins' contract situation remains one to watch as Minnesota weighs its future with the QB.
