The Tampa Bay Rays currently own the 12th-best team ERA in baseball (3.54) and have been leaning on a strong starting rotation to get wins during the 2022 season. More help could be on the way soon as Shane Baz is set to start a rehab assignment with the Triple-A Durham Bulls on Thursday.

Shane Baz Injury Update

Baz has been slowly working his way back to the mound ever since undergoing elbow surgery in March. The 22-year-old is expected to pitch two innings and then ramp up his workload from there. A couple of rehab appearances will be needed before Baz is ready to return to the major league level.

It's an encouraging update for a player that look poised to make a big jump for Tampa Bay this season. Baz posted an impressive 2.03 ERA and 0.68 WHIP across a total of 13.1 innings pitched in 2021 (3 starts). The former first-round pick also struck out 18 batters and only walked three.

Rays fans should keep an eye on how Baz is able to perform facing hitters in a meaningful for the first time in months. He is first eligible to be reinstated from the 60-day injured list on June 6. Getting his powerful arm back on the team could be the boost it needs to keep up with the rest of the AL East.

Tampa Bay currently sits 5.5 games back of the New York Yankees with a 22-15 record and look poised to make a run at a Wild Card spot if necessary. For now, the Rays have odds set at +2000 to win the World Series, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
