Earlier this week, the Philadelphia Eagles brought back RB Jordan Howard on a one-year contract. The team needed depth in the backfield and signing Howard helped address that needed.

Howard had been with the Eagles organization before, having been on the roster for the 2019 NFL season. During that time, Howard rushed for 525 yards and 6 touchdowns in 10 games. He'd leave to join the Miami Dolphins the following season, only to get waived before joining the Eagles again in 2020.

The good news is that Howard's contract is a major steal for the Eagles. For starters, it's only for one year. If it doesn't work out, it's no big loss. On the other hand, Howard gets no guaranteed money, which means the Eagles can cut him at any time and not get penalized for it.

Either way, it's not surprising that Howard agreed to the contract. According to him, no other teams reached out to him during free agency and that led to him thinking that his career could be over.

Howard started his career with back-to-back 1000-plus rushing yard seasons, however, he hasn't looked the same since then. Howard played just 17 games over the last two seasons, whether that was due to injury or getting cut. If the 26-year-old wants to show that he has a lot left in the tank, he has to prove it in 2021 or his NFL days could be over.

Howard will line up behind Miles Sanders and Boston Scott in the backfield. Both of those players played impressively for the Eagles last season, despite how bad the team was. Sanders had 1,064 yards from scrimmage and 6 touchdowns while Scott had 586 yards and 2 scores. Howard will be able to provide a veteran presence in the backfield in case either back goes down or needs rest.

At the end of the day, this deal works out for both sides. The Eagles get a veteran that they're familiar with and can cut at any time. Meanwhile, Howard gets one last shot to prove that he's an NFL-caliber running back.
