This Thursday's slate features a field of 156 golfers battling for the $6 million purse one week ahead of the 2019 Open Championship at Royal Portrush Golf Cub in Northern Ireland.
This year's field also includes several up-and-coming golfers, with some looking to punch their ticket to the Open Championship, as the top-5 finishers earn a bid in next week's tournament, if not already exempt. And the favorite to win the 2019 John Deere Classic is Viktor Hovland (+1600) from Norway, who is proving to be one of the best young golfers in the game.
At just 21 years old, Hovland has turned a lot of heads this year after finishing in 12th place at the U.S. Open as an amateur with a score of 280, which is the lowest by an amateur in the tournament's history. Hovland turned pro shortly after, making his debut at the 2019 Traveler's Championship. He finished in the Top 15 in his last two PGA Tour tournaments.
Joaquin Niemann and Matthew Wolff are both +1800 to win the John Deere Classic, sitting just behind Hovland. Niemann, who is just 20 years old, did not make the cut in his lone 2019 major appearance at the PGA Championship back in May.
The 20-year-old Wolff also turned pro this year, and he is coming off his first career PGA Tour victory at the 3M Open last Sunday. Digging a little deeper into the field, Michael Kim, the reigning champion of the John Deere Classic, is an intriguing dark horse to repeat this weekend at +32000 odds.
