LSU has historically been known for its defense. Since 2015, the Tigers have produced elite NFL defensive talents including the Falcons' Deion Jones, the Jets' Jamal Adams and the Bills' Tre'Davious White.
However, Joe Burrow's play this season has been so thoroughly impressive that he's flipped the script on that narrative, and the oddsmakers have surely taken notice. At -800, the LSU QB is the heavy favorite to win the Heisman Trophy, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
Burrow's Tigers are the second-best scoring offense in the country, averaging 47.8 points per game (PPG), which is a major improvement from the 32.4 PPG that LSU averaged in 2018. He's second in the nation in passing yards (3,687) and touchdowns (38) and is third in passer rating (202.7).
While Burrow is the hefty favorite, Ohio State's Justin Fields (+700) and Oklahoma's Jalen Hurts (+1600) are within striking distance. Fields and Hurts are both leading top-three scoring offenses and also have top-four passer ratings, heading into Week 13 of the 2019 college football season.
The only other players with odds available on FanDuel Sportsbook are Wisconsin's Jonathan Taylor and Clemson's Trevor Lawrence, who are tied at +10000.
With only three weeks left in the college football regular season, including a game against the 2-8 Arkansas Razorbacks this Saturday, it looks like this is Burrow's award to lose. But if Fields or Hurts can put up some terrific performances down the stretch, they have a puncher's chance to take home the 2019 Heisman Trophy Award.
