As the New York Jets head into the 2021 season with new franchise quarterback Zach Wilson under center, it's all about protecting the young signal-caller. Fortunately, the Jets got some great news around offensive tackle Mekhi Becton's injury update on Monday.
According to head coach Robert Saleh, Becton is expected to clear concussion protocol on Tuesday and should be on track to play in Sunday's Week 1 contest against the Carolina Panthers.
Mekhi Becton Injury Update
Becton, the Jets' first-round draft pick in 2020, suffered a head-to-head collision during New York's joint practice with the Philadelphia Eagles ahead of the preseason finale. He was able to attend practice last week despite remaining in the concussion protocol, and that proved to be a positive sign for his return.
Becton played in 70% of New York's offensive snaps during his rookie campaign while the team allowed 43 sacks (24th).
Now, entering Week 1, the Jets will look to turn the page on a 2-14 finish last season. The disappointing finish did land them the No. 2 draft pick and a franchise quarterback, but this team hasn't finished above .500 since 2015.
It will be an uphill battle as New York holds just +490 odds to make the playoffs on FanDuel Sportsbook.
