Houston Astros rookie shortstop Jeremy Pena has been everything the club could have hoped for in the wake of Carlos Correa's departure. Although Pena has been lighting it up with an impressive .277/.333/.471 slash line and 9 home runs, his rookie campaign hit a snag on Tuesday night.

Pena didn't suit up for Houston during Tuesday night's matchup with the Texas Rangers, and instead was flown back home from Arlington for tests on an apparent thumb injury.

Astros GM James Click dubbed the issue as "nothing severe" earlier this morning, but it seems to have taken an unfortunate turn.

Jeremy Pena Injury Update

The Astros officially placed Pena on the 10-day injured list on Wednesday morning with thumb discomfort.

Astros News

It's a bit of a mixed bag of news as manager Dusty Baker updated the media with his rookie's latest injury status.

While Baker also alluded to "no significant damage," there's a very unclear timeline on just how much time Pena will miss. The veteran manager was asked about a potential timeline, and opted for a pretty grim answer.

"No, no," said Baker when asked how long Pena will be out. "He's not supposed to swing for a week."

This has the makings of a lengthier absence than the Astros faithful were hoping for, but at this point, all that can be done is to wait and see.

Fortunately, the Astros have some breathing room in the standings. Houston is 8.5 games up in the AL West standings and holds the third-best odds (+700) to win the 2022 World Series on FanDuel Sportsbook.
