On Tuesday, Jennifer King made history when she was promoted to the role of assistant running backs coach job with the Washington Football Team.

King becomes the first black woman to become an NFL coach in league history. That doesn't mean she lacks experience at the NFL level, though.

Jennifer King NFL Coaching History

King may not have technically been an NFL coach in the past, but she has spent plenty of time in Ron Rivera's organizations. She first broke onto the scene as an intern working with the wide receivers for the Carolina Panthers in 2018, then switched over to working with Christian McCaffrey and the running backs in 2019.

When Rivera moved to Washington, King joined him, serving as a coaching intern in the 2020 season.

Rivera has had three years to get to know King and see her abilities as a coach.

Jennifer King Football Playing History

King's knowledge of the game of football isn't just theoretical, either. After graduating from Guilford College in 2006, she joined the Carolina Phoenix of the Women's Football Alliance (WFA).

She played both the quarterback and wide receiver positions in her time with the Phoenix, and also played some defensive back for the New York Sharks and D.C. Divas in 2019 to close out her 13-year playing career.
