Jay Ajayi Fantasy 2019 Season Could Become Relevant Sooner Rather Than Later

Free-agent running back Jay Ajayi has not seen NFL action since October 7 of last season, but after recovering from knee surgery to repair a torn ACL, he has informed all teams that he is ready for game action.

This is the first step of many for Ajayi to emerge back into fantasy relevancy, but the rest of this process could happen quickly, with teams already in need of a talented running back's services.
Most notably, the New York Giants lost star running back Saquon Barkley to a sprained ankle. Ajayi could not only be a more-than-serviceable back while Barkley is out, but also a nice complement once he returns, lightening his workload a bit during a year that does not have postseason aspirations.

Ajayi consistently ranked among the NFL's elite in yards after contact per attempt + forced missed tackles.
From 2006-2017, he had the highest % of yards gained after contact, per PFF.#GiantsPride
Another team that could use Ajayi now, but wouldn't be as fruitful from a fantasy perspective, would be the Detroit Lions. They recently cut veteran C.J. Anderson, after not being effective enough as a secondary back for the team. Detroit averages less than 100 rushing yards per game (98.7) and has a 3.4 rushing average (sixth-worst in NFL). His strong running could pair well alongside Kerryon Johnson, but he would likely become touchdown-dependent for fantasy.
It appears Ajayi will find a team sooner rather than later, meaning he is a good stash on your bench for now, especially in deeper leagues. While the situation he finds himself in may not be ideal, there is a chance further opportunity opens up for a veteran running back this week.
