The 2021 NFL season is supposed to be a new era for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Unfortunately, they hit a snag leading up to it as defensive end Josh Allen — not to be confused with the Buffalo Bills quarterback — was placed on the COVID-19 list on Monday.

Considering how Allen was seen as a key part of the Jaguars defense, this news isn't what fans or the team wanted to hear. Nevertheless, it's yet to be confirmed as to whether he tested positive for COVID-19 or if it's more of a precautionary measure.

The silver lining to the situation is that the Jaguars don't start the 2021 season until Sept. 12, so there's still a lot of time for Allen to get off of the COVID-19 list and return to the team. As soon as two of his tests come back negative with a 24-hour period, he'll be permitted to return to football activities, according to the NFL's COVID guidelines.

After a promising rookie season in 2019 that saw him make a Pro Bowl, a knee injury held Allen to just eight games played in 2020. He recorded 13 total tackles, 2.5 sacks and one pass defended during that span, which left a lot of Jaguars fans hoping for a bounce-back campaign this year. After all, Allen's 69.6 overall Pro Football Focus grade was a slight improvement over what he had as a rookie (68.4), so it wouldn't be unfathomable to see him return to form as long as he avoids injuries.

Without the former first-round pick, the Jaguars have a tough task ahead of them as they're set to face the New Orleans Saints in Week 3 of the 2021 NFL preseason on Monday. Jacksonville enters the contest as +170 underdogs, according to FanDuel Sportsbook, while New Orleans is the -200 favorite.
