The past 1.5 seasons have been full of ups and downs for St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Jack Flaherty. The promising 26-year-old righty tossed just 78.1 innings of work a year ago after dealing with multiple injuries that cost him the majority of his 2021 campaign.

Flaherty's string of bad luck continued into 2022, where he began the year on the IL with right shoulder bursitis. Manager Oliver Marmol detailed on Monday that his young righty is nearing a return as he continues a rehab assignment, but that news took an amazing turn of events for the Cardinals on Tuesday.

Jack Flaherty Injury Update

Instead of opting for one or two additional rehab starts, the Cardinals will activate Flaherty to make a start on Wednesday against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Cardinals News

Flaherty was originally scheduled for a rehab assignment with Triple-A Memphis on Wednesday, but instead will head to Busch Stadium for his heavily-anticipated season debut.

The Cardinals are eager for Flaherty's return to a rotation marred by injuries, particularly to Steven Matz and Jordan Hicks. The remaining three Cardinals starting pitchers have been terrific, as Miles Mikolas, Adam Wainwright and Dakota Hudson all own sub-3.30 ERAs.

St. Louis has doubleheader action against the Pirates on Tuesday before Flaherty's debut Wednesday night. Wednesday's contest is scheduled for 7:45 p.m. ET, or 6:45 p.m. local time, as St. Louis holds a slim 1.0-game lead over the second-place Milwaukee Brewers.
