Illinois vs Virginia Prediction & Pick

Fans are in for a battle here as Illinois and Virginia look to make an early statement before conference play starts. The Cavaliers are doing exactly what they weren't doing last year and that is hitting threes. Head coach Tony Bennett's squad is shooting a stellar 51.6% from beyond the arc (No. 2 in NCAA).

That is not great news for a Fighting Illini defense that just allowed the Bruins to shoot 40.9% from three-point range. Illinois is also not accustomed to playing at the slow pace that Virginia has become known for over the years. I see the Cavaliers getting out to an early lead and never letting it go.

Final Score Prediction: Illinois: 60 | Virginia: 65

Illinois vs Virginia Best Bet

Shooting regression is coming at some point for the Cavaliers, but I'm not going to stop backing them until it happens. Virginia ranks 17th in the country in shooting percentage (51.4%) and also ranks 18th in the nation in second half points per game (46.0). Bennett has hit all of the right buttons at halftime.

Yes, Shannon has been a scoring machine for Illinois. However, he is one of just two Fighting Illini players putting up over 10.0 points per game. If Virginia can simply shut him down, it has a chance to pull away in this one by the end. The Cavaliers have six players averaging at least 8.0 points per game.

Bet: Virginia Cavaliers ML (-102)
