The New York Mets pulled a rabbit out of the hat early Wednesday morning when it was reported they had agreed to a 12-year, $315 million contract with Carlos Correa. Yes, that same Carlos Correa that had previously agreed just last week to a massive 13-year contract with the San Francisco Giants.
Things started to seem fishy when the Giants canceled the press conference they had set to introduce Correa. Then word came out there was some issue with Correa's physical.
We then heard nothing all of Tuesday night from neither Correa nor the Giants. The silence was not only deafening, but turned out to be telling. By Wednesday morning, Correa had gone from the shortstop of the future for the Giants to the third basemen of the future for the Mets.
After the Mets essentially swooped in and stole Correa, everyone is wondering when the first matchup between the two teams is. April 20, the Mets will visit the San Francisco Giants and begin a four-game series. They will play on national TV, on ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball on April 23.
After spurning the Giants, Correa is sure to receive a hostile welcome to Oracle Park. This is pretty unprecedented territory in terms of a contract of this magnitude falling through at the last minute.
While Correa did "agree to" a contract with the Giants, nothing was actually ever signed. All pro sports contracts are agreed to, pending a physical. In the Giants' eyes, Correa failed his physical. The Mets clearly had no issue with whatever gave the Giants pause.
Get your popcorn ready for April 20-23, it should be one hell of a welcome "back" to San Fran for Correa.
