The St. Louis Cardinals overtook the Milwaukee Brewers for the NL Central lead in early August and have never looked back. Now, a powerful lineup led by MVP candidate Paul Goldschimdt and a deep pitching rotation led by veteran Adam Wainwright have chance to clinch a division title on Tuesday.
St. Louis Cardinals NL Central
Only one thing is standing in the way of the Cardinals popping champagne bottle on Tuesday night and that is the Brewers themselves. The rivals meet for a crucial three-game series in Milwaukee. If the Cardinals win, they win the division. If the Brewers win, they live to fight for at least one more day.
The Cardinals are sending Miles Mikolas to the mound opposite Adrian Houser. Mikolas is 11-13 on the year with a 3.35 ERA and 1.04 WHIP. He has also struck out 144 batters in across 31 starts. In his last matchup against Milwaukee, Mikolas gave up 2 earned runs in 8 innings in a 6-3 St. Louis victory.
Houser has not had the same success as Mikolas has. The 29-year-old owns a 4.62 ERA in 2022 and was lit up for 8 runs (5 earned) in 4 innings of work in his most recent start against the Cardinals. No wonder St. Louis is the favorite with odds set at -112 on the moneyline, per FanDuel Sportsbook.
This would be the Cardinals' second NL Central title in the last four years and the 12th in franchise history. Up next on their list of goals has to be winning a playoff series for the first time since they reached the NLCS in 2019. St. Louis has the sixth-best odds to hoist the World Series Trophy at +1700.
