In case you missed it, the Oakland Raiders were selected as the team to appear this year on HBO's popular show "Hard Knocks", which follows an NFL team through training camp in a reality TV setting.
The Raiders were one of five teams that could have been forced by the NFL to be on the show.
HBO announced Browns for Hard Knocks on May 17 last year, so it shouldn't be much longer 'til we hear 2019 team. Reminder of the five teams who can't say no (returning HC, no playoffs last two years and not been on show last 10 years):— Matt Schneidman (@mattschneidman) May 7, 2019
While any NFL team can choose to appear on the show, it's not exactly something head coaches hope for. However, there are sets of rules that disqualify teams from being forced to appear on HBO's hit show.
The rules to avoid being on "Hard Knocks" are as follows:
- If the team made the playoffs either of the last two seasons.
- The team has a new head coach.
- The team has appeared on "Hard Knocks" in the past 10 years.
Looking ahead, there are some teams that could be in line to be in contention for next year's show, on top of the four that weren't chosen this season (Giants, Lions, Redskins, 49ers). A couple of NFC North teams in the Packers and Vikings could be candidates if they both fail to make the playoffs and retain their head coaches.
If the #Vikings don't make the playoffs in 2019 and Mike Zimmer remains the coach they would be candidates for "Hard Knocks" in 2020. The NFL can force a team to do it if it hasn't been on the last 10 years, hasn't made the playoffs two straight years and doesn't have a new coach— Chris Tomasson (@christomasson) June 12, 2019
While this list of teams can always change based on the guidelines and what happens during this upcoming NFL season, there's already a growing list of teams who are halfway there.
