Vegas Golden Knights vs Colorado Avalanche News, Analysis, and Picks

The Vegas Golden Knights responded to the Game 1 thrashing with their best five-on-five effort of the postseason in Game 2. Now, the series shifts back to Vegas, where the Knights have been one of the best teams all season.

Vegas has posted an expected goals-for percentage above 54.0% at five-on-five in three of their four home playoff games, with their two most recent games being their best efforts. The Knights expected goals-for percentage was above 63% at five-on-five in both games, jumping up to above 68.0% across all strengths. We saw a similar effort in Game 2 against the Colorado Avalanche, as the Knights put forward a 69.4% rating. That makes Game 3 the Knights' game to lose if they can sustain that level of play on home ice.

Limiting the Avalanche has been a tall order this season, but the Knights have embraced that challenge in round 2. Colorado has been limited to eight or fewer high-danger chances and 18 or fewer scoring opportunities at five-on-five in each of the first two games of the series. That makes it five straight games in which the Golden Knights' opponents were limited to eight or fewer high-danger chances.

Colorado has overcome their deficiencies at five-on-five by dominating on special teams. Two of the Avs' three goals in Game 2 came with the man-advantage, including the game-winner in overtime. That has also helped them go from a negative relative expected goals-for percentage at five-on-five to a positive evaluation across all strengths.

Vegas can't give Nathan MacKinnon and company too much room to operate, which should result in a more disciplined effort from the Knights on Friday night. The Golden Knights outplayed the Avalanche across all strengths in every home game this season. We're expecting that trend to continue as the Knights climb back into this series. Vegas dominated last time out, which should be amplified now that they return to home ice.

Golden Knights' moneyline is the play.
