The NL West has been a madhouse in 2022 and the San Francisco Giants are in the thick of it. The Giants are only six games back of the divisional lead and currently occupy an NL wild card spot, positioning themselves as likely buyers ahead of the 2022 MLB trade deadline.

If San Francisco wants to make a big splash at the deadline, management might be forced to give up a top prospect. As per The Athletic, Giants insider Andrew Baggarly suggests that one prospect that the club could part ways with is right-handed reliever Gregory Santos.

Giants Trade Rumors

One reason why Baggarly thinks that the organization would be comfortable with moving Santos is that the Giants "prefer to trade players who require 40-man protection but aren’t part of the active major league group." The 22-year-old certainly fits that description.

Santos is a promising prospect who needs to work more on his consistency. The righty has made 18 relief appearances for Triple-A Sacramento this season, pitching to a 3.66 ERA and 1.576 WHIP while striking out 19 batters over19.2 innings pitched.

The issue with Santos' consistency is that he's a much better pitcher at home (12 games, 1.29 ERA) than he is on the road (nine games, 5.79 ERA). If he can find a better balance, he has a bright future as a Major-League reliever one day.

With the Giants being unafraid to move prospects if it means improvement in the present, Santos might be in his last weeks with the organization. Only time will tell if a potential deal ends up boosting San Francisco's championship odds.

Giants World Series Odds

Even though the Giants are one of the MLB's better teams, they need some help catching their NL West rivals. San Francisco's +3000 (T-No. 10) 2022 World Series odds trail both the Los Angeles Dodgers (+450, No. 2) and San Diego Padres (+1300, T-No. 6) on FanDuel Sportsbook.
