It's been a chaotic offseason for the San Francisco Giants to say the least. After striking out on deals for the superstars of this year's free agent class, San Francisco pivoted and agreed to a deal with veteran Michael Conforto in late-December.
The Giants made the signing official on Friday, which also prompted them to designate a depth player for assignment in order to clear a roster spot.
Catcher Austin Wynns was DFA's to make room for Conforto on the 40-man roster. This reduces SF's depth at C to just two players in Joey Bart and now-primary backup Blake Sabol.
Wynns saw notable run with the Giants in 2022 as Bart dealt with injuries and some struggles. In his age-31 season, Wynns recorded 3 home runs and 21 RBIs while slashing .259/.313/.358 across 65 games.
Now it remains to be seen if Wynns is claimed by another club off of waivers. With Sabol, a Rule 5 selection, not boasting any MLB experience, it'd be no surprise to see San Francisco pursue a veteran in free agency ahead of Spring Training to back up Bart.
