The San Francisco Giants are in the thick of the NL West race as the month of May comes to a close. After missing a few games recently with side tightness, standout first baseman Brandon Belt had made his return to the lineup last week.

However, Belt was removed from Tuesday's game because of the same injury. And the latest update isn't promising.

It appears that Belt reaggravated the injury on a swing-and-miss in the top of the ninth on Tuesday. Manager Gabe Kapler says the first baseman could now get another MRI and see doctors again.

Considering this is now a recurring issue, it's possible there's a much more serious injury that will need to be addressed. And it could cost Belt precious time out of the lineup.

So far the former All-Star is slashing .261/.338/.545 with 8 home runs (third on the team) and 21 RBIs (tied for second on the team). Any extended absence would be costly as San Francisco looks to stay in the playoff hunt.

The Giants currently boast the third-best record in the NL and +4000 odds to win the World Series, according to MLB futures on FanDuel Sportsbook.
