Contract talks between quarterback Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens stayed behind the scenes for most of the offseason. No deal was signed, but that doesn't mean one wasn't offered. ESPN's Chris Mortensen provided the frustrating details of that offer ahead of Week 1 NFL kickoff.

Baltimore Ravens News

Baltimore put an offer on the table that tied Jackson to the Ravens through the 2027 season. It was worth over $250 million, but only $133 million of that was fully guaranteed money. Overall, it would've increased the total value of Jackson's deal to just under $274 million over six years. He rejected it.

Jackson rejected the offer because he is seeking a fully guaranteed contract, which is similar to the deal quarterback Deshaun Watson inked with the Cleveland Browns ($230 million guaranteed) in March. Jackson has the achievements (NFL MVP, two-time Pro Bowl) and age (25) to warrant that.

Mortenson also noted that Jackson may take on the same strategy Kirk Cousins did before signing his contract extension with the Minnesota Vikings. The Ravens can use the franchise tag on Jackson in 2023 as well as 2024, which would guarantee him about $100 million over the next two seasons.

That would mean Jackson becomes an unrestricted free agent in 2025. He can use that leverage to get the Ravens to bite on a bigger deal or actually entertain the idea of signing elsewhere. Jackson is betting on himself and that is definitely a risk. However, it's a risk that could pay off in a massive way.

For now, Jackson remains focused on taking the team around him to Super Bowl 57. Baltimore has odds set at +2000 to hoist the Lombardi Trophy, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
