The NFL offseason isn't slowing down anytime soon as a number of teams are set to gain cap space following post-June 1 releases. In fact, the Minnesota Vikings are set to gain almost $8 million in cap space following the release of long-time tight end Kyle Rudolph.
The team still has some holes on the roster and can use this money to search through the free agency market for depth players and underrated signings. With that being said, here are three free agent the Vikings can sign with the new cap space.
Minnesota Vikings Free Agent Targets
1. Olivier Vernon, EDGE
One spot on the roster where the Vikings could use some added depth is on the edge of the defensive line. Second-year player D.J. Wonnum is unproven and would benefit from having a veteran to split snaps with and learn from as well. Olivier Vernon fits that role to a tee and has posted solid production over the last few seasons. The 30-year-old playmaker has racked up 12.5 sacks and 2 forced fumbles over the last two seasons (24 games played). He still has some gas left in the tank and would make a great addition to this defensive unit.
2. Golden Tate, WR
The Vikings have one of the best one-two punches at wide receiver in the league with Adam Thielen and Justin Jefferson. However, the depth behind those two players is severely shallow. Projected No. 3 WR Chad Beebe has just 310 receiving yards in his three-year NFL career. Minnesota should take a look at veteran pass-catcher Golden Tate in free agency. Tate has posted at least 600 receiving yards in eight of his last nine seasons and has 46 career touchdowns. The 32-year-old still has the skills to carve out a role on this offense.
3. Rick Wagner, OT
It is no secret that the biggest need this offseason for the Vikings was upgrading the offensive line. They made sure to address the issue by adding Riley Reiff and drafting Christian Darrisaw, but it wouldn't be a bad idea to sign another OL in free agency. Depth is so vital at this position as injuries seem to happen all the time. Rick Wagner is a player that sticks out in this scenario as he has eight years of NFL experience and appeared in 16 games last season. He would be the perfect kind of player to have waiting in the wings.
