The Miami Dolphins spent the No. 5 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft to make former Alabama legend Tua Tagovailoa the future of their franchise. One underwhelming performance in his first NFL start later, and it doesn't seem like anything has changed.
At least not according to Dolphins head coach Brian Flores, who gave Tua a serious vote of confidence on Thursday morning.
This is exactly what Dolphins fans were hoping to hear from their head coach, and it's part of the reason this fanbase has fallen in love with Flores so quickly. It's obviously ridiculous to panic about one bad start from Tua, who was playing in his first real game action since suffering that devastating hip injury.
Plus, he made that start against the Los Angeles Rams, a top-10 defense in Football Outsiders' DVOA metrics. That was always going to be a difficult spot for Tua, and while he didn't exactly do much to help the team win, going 12-of-22 for 93 yards and a TD, he didn't do anything to lose the game either. Miami ultimately won handily, defeating Los Angeles, 28-17.
Everyone knows there will be better days ahead for Tua. But it has to be comforting for Dolphins fans to hear as much from Flores.
