In a battle between the two best teams in the National League, the New York Mets took down the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday night behind the efforts of ace Jacob deGrom. Another stellar performance by the two-time Cy Young Award winner prompted some high praise from Mookie Betts.
Dodgers vs. Mets
When Betts was asked what it was like to face deGrom, he almost couldn't find the words to answer. The six-time All-Star then explained that every pitch he throws is challenging and that's what makes him one of the best to ever take the mound. The stats have always backed up Betts' thinking, too.
deGrom has allowed one of fewer runs in 100 of his 204 career MLB starts, which is the best mark in the history of baseball. He also owns the second-lowest WHIP of all-time, trailing only Addie Joss of the early 1900's. The dominance he showed prior to his injuries in 2021 has returned this season.
Across six starts in 2022, deGrom has posted a 1.98 ERA and 0.55 WHIP. He has also gotten batters to swing and miss on 43% of his pitches. Now, it's important to note that Betts did hit a home run against deGrom on Wednesday. He was able to connect on a slider left over the middle of the plate.
It was Betts' second career hit off deGrom in eight career at-bats, so it'll be interesting to see what happens if these two stars meet head-to-head again in the playoffs. For now, the Dodgers (+145) and Mets (+240) rank first and second in the odds to win the NL, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
