The Indianapolis Colts announced on Tuesday that they were waiving kicker Eddy Pineiro as the 80-man roster deadline looms. Pineiro had been excellent for the Colts in the preseason, going a perfect 4-for-4 on field goal attempts through two exhibition games. However, Indianapolis already has sophomore Rodrigo Blankenship on their roster, so the former Bears kicker is not needed.
Nevertheless, Pineiro's preseason likely caught the attention of some teams that could use a more reliable kicker. He's only 25 years old too, so any interested organization could get some decent mileage out of him.
Here's a look at the three most likely destinations for Pineiro ahead of the 2021 NFL season.
Eddy Pineiro Rumors
1. Carolina Panthers
The Carolina Panthers already have a kicker in Joey Slye, however, the 25-year-old's tenure with the team could be coming to an end soon. Slye has already missed three field goals in the preseason and head coach Matt Rhule said that he needs to do better. In that case, it makes sense for the Panthers to bring in Pineiro. After all, some competition could be what's best for the organization. On one hand, it can force Slye to play better than he has. On the other, if it doesn't work out for him, the Panthers can move on to Pineiro and be happy with the more consistent kicker.
2. New England Patriots
The New England Patriots looked great in their 35-0 win over the Philadelphia Eagles last week. On the other hand, their kicker, Quinn Nordin, didn't fare too well. Nordin missed two extra points and a field goal attempt, further proving how inconsistent he's been this offseason. Veteran Nick Folk is slated to be New England's true No. 1 kicker, but he's been away from training camp for unknown reasons over the past few weeks and only returned to practice on Monday. If the Patriots want to have a successful season, bringing in Pineiro as an insurance policy is the right thing to do. After all, they can't rely on Nordin's current play and there's no telling how well the 36-year-old Folk will hold up if his recent issues are concerning.
3. Minnesota Vikings
The Minnesota Vikings got a great look at Pineiro during their 12-10 loss to the Colts last weekend as the kicker hit three field goals against them. Meanwhile, Vikings K Greg Joseph missed a field goal that would've won Minnesota the game when all was said and done. Considering how Joseph hasn't kicked in an NFL regular season game since 2019, it'd be wise for the Vikings to give Pineiro a shot. He hasn't played a meaningful game in two years either, however, a competition between the two veterans will at least give Minnesota the best possible option for their upcoming campaign.
