The Miami Dolphins are bringing in free-agent safety Malik Hooker for a visit on Tuesday. Hooker tore his Achilles last year and was only able to appear in two games in 2020, but the former first-round pick still offers a lot of upside.

He'd be a really nice fit in Brian Flores' emerging defense.

When on the field, Hooker has generally been a very solid defender. ProFootballFocus gave Hooker a stellar 79.1 overall grade back in 2018, and he followed that up with a rock-solid 69.5 in 2019. Considering he won't turn 26 until next offseason, Hooker is absolutely worth the gamble.

if he plays up to that potential, he'd really fill a need in Miami. While the Dolphins' cornerbacks might be some of the best in the league, their safeties leave a lot to be desired. Bobby McCain received a 62.1 from PFF last season, and Eric Rowe earned a 58.9.

2021 second-round pick Jevon Holland should be able to step into a big role right away, but Hooker could be a great signing in case he needs some time to develop. And if both Holland and Hooker hit from day one, Miami could suddenly have a dynamic duo at safety to pair with Xavien Howard and Byron Jones at CB.

All told, Hooker looks like a fantastic low-risk, high-reward gamble for the Dolphins.
