Devonta Freeman has been playing a key role for the New York Giants this season. He signed with the team after Saquon Barkley was lost for the season with a torn ACL during Week 2 and has been working as the lead back after since.
However, Freeman is now dealing with an injury of his own. The former Atlanta Falcon left NYG's Week 7 showdown with the Philadelphia Eagles following an ankle injury. There's nothing concrete about the severity of the injury quite yet, but any extended absence for Freeman would put Wayne Gallman on the FLEX radar.
Wayne Gallman Fantasy Outlook
Gallman took over once Freeman went down in the third quarter. He looked pretty impressive, turning 10 carries into 34 yards, adding another 20 receiving yards on 5 receptions. Gallman showed a lot more burst than the relatively inefficient stat sheet might lead you to believe.
Don't go running to the waiver wire quite yet, though. New York takes on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 8, and they're the league's best run defense in virtually every available number. Plus, that's a Monday Night Football game, giving Freeman even more time to get healthy.
Neither Gallman or Freeman will be worth a look against Tampa Bay, regardless of Freeman's situation. But Gallman could be a name to at least watch going forward, since he did run pretty well in a big spot last night, while Freeman will remain a low-end FLEX option in most matchups.
