Defensive Backs the Cowboys Need to Go After in Free Agency

The Dallas Cowboys have one of the most talented rosters in the NFL, but that didn't translate into production in 2019. The team finished 8-8, and Jason Garrett's tenure in Dallas came to an end as a result.

Unless new head coach Mike McCarthy wants to suffer the same fate, this team needs to improve in some key areas. The secondary looks like an area of need, especially with Byron Jones likely on his way out of town. With that in mind, here are three defensive backs Dallas should target in free agency.

1. Anthony Harris

Anthony Harris quietly put together a great season for the Minnesota Vikings, hauling in a career-high 6 interceptions. But with Minnesota having the least cap space in the NFL, it's tough to see him returning to the team. Harris could be a significant upgrade over Xavier Woods, and he'd help solidify the backend of this defense.

2. Tre Boston

Ultimately, though, Harris could prove to be a bit too expensive, given that Dallas still needs to re-sign Dak Prescott and Amari Cooper. Tre Boston would be a fit for the same reasons as Harris, and he's likely to come at a much-cheaper price tag. Boston has hauled in a combined 11 interceptions over the past three seasons, and he's exactly the type of ball-hawking playmaker Dallas needs on the backend. At 27 years old, he should have plenty left in the tank.

3. Chris Harris Jr.

If the Cowboys want to replace Byron Jones, Chris Harris Jr. could be their best bet. A three-time Pro Bowler, he's arguably the most well-known DB available in free agency. He's coming off a bit of a down year in 2019, though, having surrendered a 112.3 passer rating when targeted in coverage (86.4 in 2018). That drop in production, combined with some injury concerns (he broke his fibula toward the end of 2018) could drive down his price tag. If Dallas can bring him in at the right number, he'd be a much-needed addition to this secondary.
