The Houston Texans are likely going to be thin at running back when they take on the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 16 NFL action. Veteran David Johnson is not expected to suit up due to a quad injury, which opens the door for Rex Burkhead to take on a workhorse role in the backfield.
David Johnson Injury Update
Johnson has been trending in the wrong direction after not practicing at all this past week. He returned to the field in Week 15 after missing the team's previous two games. However, he finished with just 27 total yards on 7 touches and played in only 20% of Houston's offensive snaps.
Rex Burkhead Fantasy Outlook
Burkhead saw 16 carries for the second time this season during the Texans' third win of the year and finished the game with 47 total yards. He played in a season-high 64% of the offensive snaps and looked every bit like a trusted starter. Head coach David Culley has no reason not to back him on Sunday.
Royce Freeman is expected to see some work as well, but Burkhead is the best option from a fantasy football perspective. Keep in mind the Chargers have posted the second-worst rush defense DVOA rating in the NFL and are giving up the fifth-most PPR fantasy points to opposing RBs.
Fantasy managers in need of a high-upside FLEX play can feel comfortable targeting Burkhead. The 31-year-old's receiving abilities will come in handy is the Texans find themselves in a blowout. All things considered, Burkhead checks in at RB34 in The Duel's Week 16 fantasy football rankings.
