The Green Bay Packers have largely kept quiet about Davante Adams' toe injury, but the star wideout has given us our most concrete update on his status yet. And it wasn't an encouraging one if you're relying on him in fantasy football, as Adams has said that he's unsure of the timetable for his return to the field, describing it as a "major injury."
That's a departure from last week's reports that the injury wasn't expected to be a long-term issue.
Adams had dominated the volume in the Packers' passing game before his injury, racking up 25 percent of the targets and 31 percent of the air yards through Week 4. That came to a crescendo in that Week 4 game when Adams had 15 targets prior to the toe issue.
Aaron Rodgers spread the ball around heavily with Adams out in Green Bay's Week 5 win over the Dallas Cowboys, not sending more than eight of his 34 pass attempts to any one receiver, while targeting nine different players at least once.
But we can expect that distribution to tighten up some. Marquez Valdes-Scantling played more than 90 percent of the team's snaps in Week 5, even though he wasn't used heavily, and he looks like the safest bet to be the team's top WR for the time being. Geronimo Allison also got a nice boost with a season-high snap share last week, and he should also pick up some significant volume with Adams sidelined.
Adams was well on his way to proving that he was still a no-doubt fantasy football WR1 in Week 4, and whenever he gets back up to 100 percent that should continue to be the case. However, Adams' fantasy owners will need to exercise some patience while stashing him on the bench until there is a more definitive update on his health.
