The New York Mets recently acquired slugger Daniel Vogelbach from the Pittsburgh Pirates in a trade that largely flew under the radar. He made his debut in front of a raucous crowd at Citi Field during an 8-5 win on Sunday Night Baseball and was surprised at the environment he now gets to call home.

Vogelbach raved about the 39,395 fans that were in attendance. It makes sense considering the 29-year-old has appeared in just five playoff games during his seven-year career. Stints with the Seattle Mariners, Milwaukee Brewers, Toronto Blue Jays and Pirates have come with little team success.

Manager Buck Showalter started Vogelbach at designated hitter on Sunday and it ended up making a major difference. His single in the fifth inning was the Mets' first hit of the night against Joe Musgrove and kickstarted the rest of the offense. Pete Alonso broke things open with a three-run home run.

“I think people kind of rallied around his first hit as a Met. That was a good feeling in the dugout for a lot of reasons. He had a big walk, which is what he does. It’s good to see him get off to a good start.”

It was important to get Vogelbach some playing time with the Mets off on Monday and expected to face a left-handed pitcher on Tuesday. After all, he was acquired as a player capable of crushing right-handers. Vogelbach owns a career on-base percentage of .359 against RHP versus .258 against LHP.

The Mets have odds set at +800 to win the World Series, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
