Dan Campbell Shares Bizarre Take on Quarterbacks

Both the Denver Broncos and Cleveland Browns dealt first-round picks for veteran quarterbacks this offseason in hopes of bolstering their Super Bowl chances. It's become a popular strategy over the years, yet Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell believes an elite QB is not necessary for success.

Campbell told reporters that while those kind of players are special, a team can have sustained success without one. This could easily be a way to keep the Lions cards hidden prior to the NFL Draft. However, it could also be Campbell's way of saying that current starter Jared Goff is not the future.
Goff led Detroit to a 3-10-1 record across 14 starts in 2021 and averaged just 231.8 passing yards per game. His 9.8 yards per completion mark was a career-low and proved he struggled to move the ball down the field. Rumors continue to circulate around the Lions drafting a QB in the first round.
Campbell did mention that the Lions were impressed by Liberty's Malik Willis and UNC's Sam Howell. It would be surprising to see them take a signal-caller with the No. 2 overall pick, though. Finding a way to move up from No. 32 overall and into the early 20s makes a lot more sense in that case.
It's important to remember that the Lions traded away a player considered to be an elite QB last offseason in Matthew Stafford. Of course, the Pro Bowler went on to win the Super Bowl in his first season with the Los Angeles Rams. The result had to at least sting for Detroit fans a little bit.
Keep on eye on what the Lions decide to do when the 2022 NFL Draft kicks off on Thursday, April 28.
