Entering the offseason, Detroit Lions running back D'Andre Swift looked like one of the best breakout candidates in fantasy. He was lined up for RB1 duties on a Lions' offense that has quietly assembled one of the most underrated offensive lines in football.
But the addition of Jamaal Williams complicated things a bit. And it's only gotten murkier now that Swift is reportedly dealing with soft-tissue injuries which have caused him to miss a ton of training camp.
Swift still has undeniable upside, but he's getting harder and harder to trust as we approach draft season.
D'Andre Swift Fantasy Outlook
Swift currently carries an average draft position (ADP) of RB15 in PPR formats, per FantasyPros. He's not being drafted as a top-tier back, but you're likely going to have to spend a Round 3 pick in order to secure his services.
He's a boom-or-bust gamble at that spot. We saw what he could do down the stretch last year, averaging 86.3 yards from scrimmage on 16.9 opportunities (carries plus targets) per game. However, he was sidelined for three games during that stretch, so the fact that he's already banged up is concerning.
He also got that workload from a different coaching staff. The Lions completely overhauled their staff and front office this offseason, meaning the new regime isn't tied to Swift at all. They weren't the ones who spent a second-round pick on the Georgia product.
In fact, this new coaching staff has spent a lot of time hyping up Jamaal Williams' play this offseason. Mix in the expected offensive drop-off from swapping Jared Goff for Matthew Stafford, and there are suddenly a lot of red flags with Swift.
D'Andre Swift ADP
At the end of the day, Swift is an elite prospect with the potential to see huge volume behind a great offensive line. That gives him a massive ceiling. But it's becoming increasingly difficult to tune out all the red flags.
He's best viewed as a boom-or-bust RB2. Swift currently checks in at RB13 in our 2021 fantasy football rankings.
