The Dallas Cowboys defense has been atrocious in 2020. They are last in points against, second to last in rush yards allowed and 22nd in sacks among other poor statistics. All that has been with defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence playing at the top of his game, and this weekend we almost saw what things would have looked like without him.
Lawrence came down with an illness this week, but after being cleared of COVID this morning, the impact player should be good to go against the Minnesota Vikings.
Although the sack numbers have not been there with 3 through nine games, Lawrence has still received top marks from Pro Football Focus throughout the season.
He currently has 34 combined tackles, 11 quarterback pressures and 2 forced fumbles in 2020, grading out at 90.1, per PFF. That's the third-best grade among all edge defenders.
Considering how often he faces a double-team on a unit void of star power, there's no questioning Lawrence's ability, or his importance to this defense as a leader and difference maker.
If the injury-ravaged Cowboys hope to stand a chance against the red-hot Dalvin Cook and the Vikes in Minnesota, they'll need their best defensive asset on the field. And that's Lawrence without question.
