Chargers Fans Will Love This Derwin James Contract Update

The Los Angeles Chargers showed during the 2021 NFL season that they have the potential to be a powerhouse one day. One of the major aspects that held them back last season was their defense, however, that wasn't due to a lack of effort from two-time Pro Bowl safety Derwin James.

After missing the entirety of the 2020 season due to a torn meniscus, James bounced back in a big way last season, earning Pro Bowl honors. That's why it's understandable that Chargers fans will be thrilled about his latest contract extension update.

The Chargers and safety Derwin James are "cautiously optimistic" they will agree on a long-term extension before the start of the regular season, per a person familiar with the situation. Both sides want to get a deal done.

Derwin James Contract Extension

USA Today's Tyler Dragon reported Friday that James and the Chargers are "cautiously optimistic" that the two sides can reach a "long-term extension" before the 2022 NFL season kicks.

James is certainly due for a pay increase after what he accomplished in his return from his torn meniscus injury. Aside from Pro Bowl honors, he finished with five defended passes, two interceptions and a career-high 118 total tackles. He also wasn't afraid to target quarterbacks, racking up 2.0 sacks and seven QB hits.

What's also impressive is that James held opposing QBs to a 56.7% completion rate and 63.7 passer rating when targeted while giving up only one touchdown. Combined with his above achievements, he finished third in NFL Comeback Player of the Year voting.

The two-time Pro Bowler's presence and continued success will help the Chargers as they look to thwart their offensively talented divisional rivals.
