The St. Louis Cardinals kicked off their free agency in a big way by signing top catcher Willson Contreras to a five-year contract. After an early exit this postseason, though, St. Louis is expected to continue to be aggressive on the open market.
Now it's been revealed the Cards are a frontrunner for an All-Star free agent still available.
Brendan Kuty of the Star-Ledger reports St. Louis is "believed to be seriously in play" for starting pitcher Carlos Rodon. They're not the only club in the mix, as the New York Yankees are his preferred team while the Minnesota Twins are deep in pursuit as well, per Kuty.
The Cardinals' interest in Rodon was revealed earlier this week after they were named as the "mystery team" making a push to sign the two-time All-Star. Now it appears the buzz connecting Rodon and St. Louis is only heating up.
This would be another splash signing by John Mozeliak and company that hurts a fellow NL contender in the process. Rodon is coming off of a stellar year for the San Francisco Giants, recording a career-high 14 wins and a 2.88 ERA across 31 starts. He led the majors in FIP and strikeouts per nine innings, showcasing he's a powerhouse arm that would significantly improve any rotation.
It'll certainly cost the Cards to steal Rodon from the Giants and the AL clubs pining to sign him, given he's seeking a lengthy deal. However, St. Louis' willingness to meet his demands could help turn this heated race in their favor.
